What is the secret of the Paratiisi series that keeps us fascinated to this day? The Secret of Paradise is a new exhibition at the Iittala & Arabia Design Centre that opens this June in which artists from the Arabia Art Department Society and a number of invited Finnish artists are inspired by the classic design created half a century ago by Professor Birger Kaipiainen. The exhibition presents the artists’ interpretations of paradise and reveal their own secrets in relation to the Paratiisi series.
The participating artists from the Arabia Art Department Society are professors Heljä Liukko-Sundström and Heikki Orvola, Kati Tuominen-Niittylä, Fujiwo Ishimoto, Pekka Paikkari, Kristina Riska, Heini Riitahuhta, Kim Simonsson and Jasmin Anoschkin. The invited artists are Johanna Rytkölä, Matti Pikkujämsä, Markku Salo, Inka Kivalo, Emma Helle and Tommi Toija. Hanni Koroma is responsible for the exhibition architecture.
Birger Kaipiainen and Paratiisi
“The artistic expression of Birger Kaipiainen and its depth are more than the images and objects might lead you to believe at first sight. The flowers, animals and landscapes seem to live a life of their own in a time of their own. The clocks that appear in Kaipiainen’s art always show a time in which the hands have stopped at quarter past twelve. The entire portfolio of Kaipiainen seems to be shrouded in secrecy. The Paratiisi ornament, designed for industrial production, is also an essential part of his art. Paratiisi fits in seamlessly with the rest of his artistic output and features strange fruits that seem to grow from one and the same plant. Despite the unconventionality and strangeness of the series, Paratiisi has been widely accepted and become a fixture on Finnish dining tables,” says Pekka Paikkari, Chairman of the Arabia Art Department Society.
The opening of the exhibition will be held on Helsinki Day, 12 June 2019, from 5pm to 7pm. The exhibition will run until the end of August. Artists will be on hand at the opening to talk about their own works.
The Secret of Paradise exhibition will also introduce a new series by Fujiwo Ishimoto entitled Appelsiini/Orange, which is included in the small series collection of the Arabia Art Department’s Art Collection. This event is open to everyone. The capacity at the gallery is approximately 200 persons. The doors to the Arabia Art Department will also be open during the vernissage. The art in the corridors can be viewed by small groups at a time.
